What is NABARD?

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is India's apex development bank. It was set up in 1982 under an Act of Parliament to promote sustainable and equitable agriculture and rural development. It is wholly owned by the Government of India.

NABARD was born out of the CRAFICARD committee (Committee to Review Arrangements for Institutional Credit for Agriculture and Rural Development), chaired by Shri B. Sivaraman, and was created through Act 61 of 1981. It was dedicated to the nation by the then Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi on 5 November 1982.

What NABARD actually does

NABARD works through three core functions, and Grade A officers get exposure to all of them:

Financial functions: refinancing banks and institutions that lend for agriculture and rural projects.
Developmental functions: building rural infrastructure, promoting SHGs and JLGs, microfinance, and rural entrepreneurship.
Supervisory functions: supervising cooperative banks and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs).

NABARD usually releases the Grade A notification between July and November, and this year it is widely expected around August 2026. The application window typically stays open for about 15 to 20 days. For reference, here is the actual 2025-26 timeline alongside the 2026 expectation.

Admit cards for each phase are generally released 2 to 3 weeks before the exam. NABARD reserves the right to change any of these dates.

How many vacancies to expect

For 2026, roughly 80 to 100 vacancies are expected across the General stream and specialised disciplines (Agriculture Engineering, Finance, Information Technology, Fisheries, Forestry, Land Development & Soil Science, and others). In 2025, NABARD announced a total of 91 vacancies. Here is the year-wise trend.

06 · Who Can Apply

Eligibility criteria

Age limit

You must be between 21 and 30 years of age as on the cut-off date given in the notification (usually the 1st day of the month in which the notification is released).

You need any one of the following from a recognised university or institution:

Post Graduate degree / MBA / PGDM with a minimum of 55% marks (SC/ST/PWBD: 50%), OR
CA / CS / CMA / ICWA, OR
Ph.D from an institution recognised by GoI / UGC.

Specialised disciplines (Finance, IT, Agriculture Engineering, Fisheries, Forestry, and so on) have their own subject-specific degree requirements. Check the exact discipline table in the official notification before applying.

How to apply

Visit the official website www.nabard.org and open the "Career Notices" / "Apply Online" section.
Register using your name, email, and mobile number to generate a provisional registration number and password.
Fill the form with your personal, academic, and category details, and choose your exam centre.
Upload documents (photo, signature, left thumb impression, and handwritten declaration) as per the size specifications.
Pay the fee online and take a printout of the confirmation and application form.

Important: You can apply for only one post or discipline. If you submit multiple applications, only the last valid one is considered, and fees for the rest are forfeited.

08 · The Journey

Selection process: four stages

For the General and Legal streams, selection happens across four stages. Only Phase II and the interview count towards the final merit list.

Phase I – Preliminary Exam: a 200-mark online objective test. Only the "merit section" score decides who moves to Phase II.
Phase II – Main Exam: a mix of descriptive and objective papers testing writing ability and subject depth.
Phase III – Psychometric Test: a mandatory MCQ-based test of 90 minutes.
Interview: the final stage, carrying 50 marks. You can choose to attend in Hindi or English.

Final merit for RDBS/Legal is based on Phase II + Interview taken together. Phase I is only a screening stage, so treat it as a gateway, not a scoring round.

09 · Prelims

Phase I (Preliminary) exam pattern

Phase I is a single online paper of 200 questions and 200 marks in a composite time of 120 minutes. It has 8 sections. Five sections are only qualifying (you just need to clear the sectional cut-off), while three sections form the merit section that decides shortlisting.

The merit section = GA + ESI + ARD = 100 marks. Shortlisting for Phase II is based on these three sections only. You still must clear the individual cut-off of every qualifying section. There is a penalty of 1/4 mark for each wrong answer.

The clear takeaway: master GA, ESI, and ARD to score, and do just enough in Reasoning, English, Quant, Computer, and Decision Making to clear their cut-offs.

10 · Mains

Phase II (Main) exam pattern

The Main exam for the General (Generalist) post has two papers. Paper I is fully descriptive, and Paper II combines an objective and a descriptive section. Answers are typed on a keyboard in English or Hindi.

Descriptive writing is the game-changer in NABARD Grade A. Candidates who write structured, well-argued answers consistently earn the final call. Practise typing (aim for 35+ words per minute) and build your own model answers well before the exam. The 1/4 negative marking applies here too.

11 · Final Stages

Psychometric test & interview

Psychometric test

This is a mandatory MCQ-based test of 90 minutes. You must appear for it to be shortlisted for the interview. It assesses personality traits and behavioural tendencies rather than academic knowledge.

Interview

The interview carries 50 marks and can be attended in Hindi or English. The calling ratio is a maximum of 1:25 for the Main exam and 1:3 for the interview (these may be reduced at NABARD's discretion).

Tie-breaker rule: if two candidates have equal total marks (Mains + Interview), the one with higher marks in the Main Examination is ranked higher.

Selected candidates start with a basic pay of ₹44,500 per month in the pay scale 44500–2500(4)–54500–2850(7)–74450–EB–2850(4)–85850–3300(1)–89150. With allowances, the initial gross monthly emoluments come to around ₹1,00,000.

Syllabus overview

The two scoring subjects, ESI and ARD, appear in both Phase I and Phase II, so they deserve the most time. Here is a high-level map.

How to prepare: a practical plan

A focused 5 to 6 month plan is usually enough if you study consistently. Here is a simple framework.

Months 1–3: Build the base

Cover the ARD static portion and agriculture-ministry schemes thoroughly. NABARD now asks from almost every chapter.
Build fundamentals in Quant, Reasoning, and English; solve chapter-wise questions.
Cover Computer Awareness and start MCQs for ARD static chapters.
Read one business newspaper daily and start learning typing (target 35+ WPM).

Months 4–5: Practice & current affairs

Attempt timed sectional and PO-style prelims mocks to fix your timing.
Start descriptive answer writing (1 to 2 questions daily or on alternate days).
Cover PIB and current-affairs magazines regularly for ESI and ARD current affairs.

Month 6: Revise & mock test

Revise everything for ARD, ESI, and Computer, and finish Decision Making.
Attempt full-length Phase I mocks for time and section management.
Once the notification is out, focus fully on Phase I until the exam.
